mySONGisRADIOready Fashion Show Recap

Saturday July 23rd - The mySONGisRADIOready Fashion Show hosted by Sherifa Gayle & Willie Brown, took place at Leather Lounge in Harlem.  The venue was filled with models, designers, make-up artists, stylists, as well as friends and family of everyone participating in the show.  Four amazing designers showcased their work that night, one of which included the host Sherifa Gayle’s line Black & Ugly.  All the designers and models brought their A game.  It’s safe to say the crowd was pleased with the eye candy provided.  About halfway through the show, 4 girls from the audience were chosen to see who had the best runway walk.  Each girl did an amazing job on the runway, but the winner won a free drink.  The girls had a great time on the runway.  From the response we received, all of our guests enjoyed themselves at the show.  Special thanks to Sherifa for working with Yes Sir Ent. on the fashion sow.  Also a special thanks to Black, founder of mySONGisRADIOready, for putting the entire event together.

Fashion: Black & Ugly

Black & Ugly Clothing was founded in December 2008 by Sherifa Gayle. Sherifa wanted to start a pro-black line with a message representing her people’s past struggles, present accomplishments and their future endeavors. An Afro- centric inspired line that caters to the urban sense and beyond. Hip, cool and diverse BU is here to praise influential individuals while inspiring others while being socially and politically conscious.

When people first see the name Black & Ugly, they ask, “Why not black and beautiful?”  Sherifa wanted to take something that is frowned upon and turn it into something positive; it’s all irony.  Where black and beautiful sounds all too cliché, Black & Ugly demands attention and fuels fire in the blood, daring people to repeat two separate hated words, both together, making them pure again.

Black is definitely not ugly, but because we as a people have been hearing it for so long, we have all begun to believe it. “I often tell people I am NOT saying black IS ugly, it’s that we have allowed continued thinking that these two words are associated with each other and means nothing good. So with that said, I wanted to take it and change one mind set at a time. All my pieces have a meaning to them, it’s clothes that make a statement; not just a logo or a tagline. I’m not here for free advertisement across your chest, I want you to speak without saying a word. The name is a shock but the clothes bring calm.” “There aren’t many brands that go the ‘black pride’ route even though all urban brands cater to Black people,” Sherifa says.  It’s more than a name, its about fueling negativity with an abundance of positivity. BU is not only an acronym for Black & Ugly, but it also holds a double message in telling the wearer to “Be You” and embrace your culture and history in everything you do including the clothes you wear.

-Make a Statement. BU.

I love the entire statement behind the line.  I just purchased my “Young Gifted and Black” pins and I’m loving them.  This is such a powerful line just because of the name BLACK AND UGLY.  If you say that name doesn’t catch your attention you’re telling a bold face lie.  I remember at one point Sherifa was considering changing the name and everyone including myself agreed she should NOT change it.  Anyone who has achieved anything great in this life has dealt with their fair share of criticism.  People fear what they do not understand.  As long as Sherifa continues on her path she will definitely make history with her line.  It’s not just the line, its the type of person Sherifa is.  She’s the female that uses her intelligence instead of her looks to get ahead.  The funny thing is if she wanted to be one of those girls who used their looks to get ahead, a good amount of females would be out of business.  You women should be thanking her, lol.  Please look to hear more from Sherifa and her line Black & Ugly.  I will definitely be purchasing more items from the line in the near future.  YES SIR SUPPORTS BLACK & UGLY!!

Below are a few pics of what the line has to offer. Enjoy!
